Founded in 1875 at the intersection of two rail lines, the summer retreat of Highlands has lost none of its historic and rustic charm. There are no malls or fast food chains, yet the area draws many visitors throughout the year to enjoy the refined shops and restaurants of this tiny mountain town. Most will also visit nearby Cashiers, an even smaller village just down the valley with many of the same qualities.
Highlands Playhouse, one of the top ten in the country, provides professional entertainment in the summer months, along with a chamber music series. Art galleries abound. The natural beauty and the many waterfalls of the area have inspired artists to settle here. But so does the golf, with 13 courses in the area, including four public courses.
