Hickory Nut Forest Eco-Community is Asheville’s only sustainable eco community offering all certified green homes, renewable energy, organic community garden and orchard, extensive land conservation with miles of hiking trails, and a brand new community center / retreat site called Laughing Waters, offering a wide variety of social gatherings, family events, and programs throughout the year.

Hickory Nut Forest adjoins 800 acres of forest wilderness in Hickory Nut Gorge, located in the heart of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.  Nestled in the midst of tumbling streams, waterfalls, wildflowers and mountain vistas, it is only a short drive to Asheville’s dining, culture, music, entertainment and sports, and friendly atmosphere. The Asheville Regional Airport is less than 20 miles away. Hickory Nut Forest Eco-community truly offers the best of both worlds – healthy mountain living with easy access to all that Asheville has to offer. The special features of this sustainable community include:

Laughing Waters Community Center and Retreat Site: Built on the site of a 19th-century gristmill, the new 3,200 sq.ft. center serves as the hub for social and family gatherings, as well as  a place for educational workshops, classes, conferences, weddings, and seasonal celebrations.

Organic Community Gardens and Apple Orchard: A community garden allows residents to grow their own organic vegetables, flowers, and herbs, and share the greenhouse, vineyard, and over 100 heirloom apple and fruit trees.

Green Homes: All homes in this green community will be certified to meet industry standards as LEED or Healthy Built Homes. Local wood, sustainable building materials, natural building techniques, rainwater catchment, and solar house designs are encouraged. Cottages and smaller green homes are also welcome. Priced starting in the $200,000's and up.

Permaculture: The entire community is designed with the ecosystem in mind: using plants, water, soils, building materials, and human structures in a way that eliminates and recycles waste, and works in harmony with natural systems rather than against them. Permaculture advice and guidelines are available to all residents.

Renewable Energy: Hickory Nut Forest is designed to be a “net zero energy” community, with solar, wind, micro-hydro, and geothermal systems generating more renewable energy than is consumed by residents. Homes currently under construction are using active and passive solar designs. The community center will be powered using micro-hydro power from Hickory Nut Creek. Future plans include installing a wind turbine on the slopes overlooking the community.

Outdoor Recreation: Hickory Nut Gorge offers a wide variety of outdoor activities including over fifteen miles of hiking trails, top level kayaking, rock climbing, fly fishing, swimming holes in Hickory Nut Creek, and beaches and boating at nearby Lake Lure. Horseback Riding facilities are available at Hickory Nut Gap Farm just a few miles away. Chimney Rock State Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are nearby.

Culture and the Arts: Asheville is just 17 miles from Hickory Nut Forest, a city famous for its great food, entertainment, art, diverse music, environmental awareness and friendly atmosphere.

Healthcare: Quality medical care and 24-hour emergency services are available at Mission Hospitals in Asheville, Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, and Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, all located less than half an hour from the property.
